SportPro LED sports floodlights vs HID sports floodlights

LED Sports Floodlighting

With the improvement of LED ( light Emitting Diode ) lighting over the past several years we can now have the

confidence to replace the old style HID

( Metal Halide and SON ) floodlights. This types of floodlighting has served us well in the past but due to high

running costs and maintenance are now set to join the history books. Inefficient lamps are slowly being phased

out to make way for more energy efficient lighting solutions. It is only a matter of time before the 1 -2Kw Metal

Halide lamps follow suit.

Along with many councils, more and more sports clubs are changing to LED lighting because it is cost effective

over the long term. People who are looking for a cheaper initial outlay will still opt for Metal Halide but often

clubs are not looking at the long term benefits of LED.

In the past LED lighting has been scarred with cheap imports striving to be first to market. now the dust has

settled and the quality has increased along with higher lumen outputs.

A quality LED floodlight will now produce over 120 lumen’s per watt were an HID light source will initially produce

between 80 - 100 Lumen’s per watt. This output is from the lamp and not the amount of light that exits the

floodlight. You can expect to loose between 20 - 25% from the HID floodlights reflector / front glass. So if an HID

floodlight manufacturer states that his 2Kw Metal Halide floodlight

produces 230,000 lumen’s it will actually be producing about 180,000

lumen’s when it leaves the light fitting.

HID floodlights have a very high lumen loss factor meaning that a

lamp will only produce the designed light output for a short period.

Metal Halide lamps will usually need replacing every 3000hrs to keep

the correct designed lighting levels. This coupled with the high

operating temperatures of the control gear can lead to high

maintenance intervals and additional costs.

LED sports floodlights such as those offered by SportPro LED offer a

better long term floodlighting solution. Most LED floodlights on the

market are of flat construction with a large thin heat sink mounted on the back. There construction looks more

like those fit for internal use not for the sorts of weather we have in the UK. They need to be tilted upwards like

the old badly installed symmetrical style floodlights of the past. This increases glare and light spillage.

The SportPro LED floodlighting range offers a better LED lighting solution. The floodlights are angled no more

than 55 degrees and project the light by using a cone mirrored reflector. The reflector comes in different optic

patterns of 15, 20, 60 and 120 degree’s. These optics allow the light to be projected on to the furthest of areas.

This coupled with a light spillage guard reduces light spillage and glare. The light can be critically controlled and

adjusted to provide the perfect LED floodlighting solution for all outdoor sports. The floodlights are IP65 sealed

and because there are no lamps to replace the weatherproof seal will remain intact reducing the chance of water

ingress and increasing the life of the fitting.

The pro’s and con’s of LED sports floodlighting.

SportPro LED Floodlighting Energy savings of approximately 50% Very low maintenance Lamp life of approximately 50,000hrs Controlled light spillage when using shields Higher initial cost Lower running temperature reducing No remote feeder pillars required to house control gear Stainless steel bolts and brackets Flicker free operation Instant on / off Dimmable option, This offers the choice of extra energy savings by having different lighting levels for matches and training.
HID Sport Floodlighting High energy costs Annual maintenance required, Lamp life of approximately 3000hrs Controlled light spillage when using shields Lower initial cost Higher running temperature increasing internal breakdown of components. Feeder pillar may be required to house control gear HID floodlights often use steel fixings that oxidize over time making servicing impossible. HID floodlights often use steel fixings that oxidize over time making them impossible to service Flickers when in operation Long warm up / cool down phases No dimming possible
