With the improvement of LED ( light Emitting Diode ) lighting over the past several years we can now have the

confidence to replace the old style HID

 ( Metal Halide and SON ) floodlights. This types of floodlighting has served us well in the past but due to high

running costs and maintenance are now set to join the history books. Inefficient lamps are slowly being phased

out to make way for more energy efficient lighting solutions. It is only a matter of time before the 1 -2Kw Metal

Halide lamps follow suit.

Along with many councils, more and more sports clubs are changing to LED lighting because it is cost effective

over the long term. People who are looking for a cheaper initial outlay will still opt for Metal Halide but often

clubs are not looking at the long term benefits of LED.

In the past LED lighting has been scarred with cheap imports striving to be first to market. now the dust has

settled and the quality has increased along with higher lumen outputs.

A quality LED floodlight will now produce over 120 lumen’s per watt were an HID light source will initially produce

between 80 - 100 Lumen’s per watt. This output is from the lamp and not the amount of light that exits the

floodlight. You can expect to loose between 20 - 25% from the HID floodlights reflector / front glass. So if an HID

floodlight manufacturer states that his 2Kw Metal Halide floodlight

produces 230,000 lumen’s it will actually be producing about 180,000

lumen’s when it leaves the light fitting.

HID floodlights have a very high lumen loss factor meaning that a

lamp will only produce the designed light output for a short period.

Metal Halide lamps will usually need replacing every 3000hrs to keep

the correct designed lighting levels. This coupled with the high

operating temperatures of the control gear can lead to high

maintenance intervals and additional costs.

LED sports floodlights such as those offered by SportPro LED offer a

better long term floodlighting solution. Most LED floodlights on the

market are of flat construction with a large thin heat sink mounted on the back. There construction looks more

like those fit for internal use not for the sorts of weather we have in the UK. They need to be tilted upwards like
